Grasping The Signal
Looking back on our year…
For over a year now, The Signal has published my daily quest to find unexpected articles, poetry, records, and ideas that are inspirational and exciting…that deserve to be paid attention to. To me, the world is on fire, and instead of creating a newsletter that is a mere echo chamber of the stories being read everywhere else, I created a newsletter for those seeking something different. In addition to offering commentary and delving deeper into what resonates as interesting or important to me, The Signal is a celebration of art and music and literature and science...of the strange and weird aspects of our world...of incredible thinkers and doers...of the great journalism lost within the small publications scattered about the Internet.
And with the year anniversary of The Signal (plus a few weeks) I am launching a subscription aspect to the newsletter.
WHY SUBSCRIBE…
Let me start by being clear: the newsletter itself will remain free. However, for those who find value in it, there is the ability to help support the work (and it is a big lift!). Subscribers will also get monthly treats like a music playlist along with liner notes about the songs and themes included. A playlist could be a deep dive on an artist (like the one I recently published about Mike Nesmith) or a theme (like this early ska playlist) or just a collection of music that sounds good together (like this beauty that has lifted my soul when needed).
For subscribers, I am going to experiment with Substack’s ability to have conversations around interesting issues and questions that are brought up in the newsletter. And there even is a subscriber level that comes with yearly or bi-yearly shipments of curated music (LP or CD…your choice).
SO, if you are loving the newsletter, maybe because of the regular piece of poetry, a music pick or an article about Langston Hughes or to celebrate the first ever radio broadcast or to see a great painting by a modern artist …or just because you like to scroll to the bottom to see the video easter egg always included…and you feel like subscribing…now is your chance.
Please spread the word…
And if that is not for you, please consider forwarding the newsletter on to a friend who might also enjoy it. It takes a lot to put these things together, and while I love it…and will keep on keeping on…the idea that more people see it is exciting!
