THE SIGNAL from David Katznelson
Cosmic time is the same for everyone, but human time differs with each person.Time flows in the same way for all human beings; every human being flows through time in a different way-Yasunari Kawabata
As you read this post I will hopefully be chilling with the fam on a houseboat in Mount Shasta without any internet connectivity. Oh yeah. But I did teach myself before the push-off how to get one of these things sent-off at a planned future time….which is now.
Happy Monday…..
That’s right, the Flaming Lips are finally releasing the music that has been called THE COMPANION to their Soft Bulletin record. The time between Transmissions from the Satellite Heart and The Soft Bulletin was a long and chaotic one, seeing the leaving of guitarist Ronald Jones and the evolution of the band’s sound. And during that time, the Lips were ACTIVE: parking lot experiments, beat box experiments, maybe the biggest experiment of all: ZAIREEKA (note: Mark Richardson’s 33 1/3 book on Zaireeka is FULL of inaccuracies)….they were in the studio recording tons of material, seeking the sound of the future, making so much stellar music. Much of it went on the now legendary Soft Bulletin. And during the roll out of the record, they put together this companion CD of outtakes…but I hate that word because the companion really was an incredible album on it’s own. I still have copies of the original CD burns that I give out when I find a true Lips fan of the highest order. And now it looks as though everyone will be able to access this bit of rock n roll history. Oh yeah.
New Release: CAN :: Live in Stuttgart 1975
And while we are talking about new releases from old recordings of incredible bands, how about this one from CAN, one of the original and best bands from Krautrock, Germany. These long jamming sessions are classic CAN and just a wonderful soundbath for summertime. Amazing that such stuff is still being unearthed.

A classic midcentury (maybe a tad later) modernists dies at 92. This is a great appreciation from Anthony Korner
Slowly, Slowly Wisdom Gathers
By: Mark Van Doren
Slowly, slowly wisdom gathers:
Golden dust in the afternoon,
Somewhere between the sun and me,
Sometimes so near that I can see,
Yet never settling, late or soon.
Would that it did, and a rug of gold
Spread west of me a mile or more:
Not large, but so that I might lie
Face up, between the earth and sky,
And know what none has known before.
Then I would tell as best I could
The secrets of that shining place:
The web of the world, how thick, how thin,
How firm, with all things folded in;
How ancient, and how full of grace.
