I admire any attempt to invent a new subgenre in a field that has been 100% bagged and tagged for many years, but I wonder if any of the artists mentioned in the 1960-63 period would sound the way they did at all without prior exposure to James Brown's 1950's recordings and live performances. The 1959 "Try Me" LP or the "Roots of a Revolution" compilation are all the evidence needed.
